肠腺的细胞有柱状细胞，杯状细胞，潘氏细胞和未分化细胞。柱状细胞和内分泌细胞与绒毛上皮相似，接近绒毛的柱状细胞与吸收细胞相似，绒毛深部的柱状细胞微绒毛少而短，不形成纹状缘，有人认为有分泌作用。小肠绒毛增大了小肠内壁的表面积，如果把所有的绒毛展开抻平，其面积可以覆盖半个网球场，巨大的表面积使营养物质能够在1-2小时内得以迅速吸收。
小肠的运动形式：分节运动，蠕动，移行性复合运动（MMC）
小肠运动形式主要有：①紧张性收缩，它是其他运动形式有效进行的基础，使小肠保持一定的形状和位置，并使肠腔内保持一定压力，有利于消化和吸收。②分节运动，其作用是使食糜与消化液充分混合，增加食糜与肠粘膜的接触，促进肠壁血液淋巴回流，这都有助于消化和吸收。③蠕动，其作用是将食糜向远端推送一段，以便开始新的分节运动。
1.紧张性收缩是小肠其它运动形式的基础，当小肠紧张性降低时，肠壁给予小肠内容物的压力小，食糜与消化液混合不充分，食糜的推进也慢。反之，当小肠紧张性升高时，食糜与消化液混合充分而加快，食糜的推进也快。
2.分节运动 分节运动是一种以环行肌为主的节律性收缩和舒张的运动，主要发生在食糜所在的一段肠管上。进食后，有食糜的肠管上若干处的环行肌同时收缩，将肠管内的食糜分割成若干节段。随后，原来收缩处舒张，原来舒张处收缩，使原来每个节段的食糜分为两半，柑邻的两半又各自合拢来形成若干新的节段，如此反复进行（图8-7）。分节运动的意义在于使食糜与消化液充分混合，并增加食糜与肠壁的接触，为消化和吸收创造有利条件。此外，分节运动还能挤压肠壁，有助于血液和淋巴的回流。
3.蠕动 小肠的蠕动通常重叠在节律性分节运动之上，两者经常并存。蠕动的意义在于使分节运动作用后的食糜向前推进，到达一个新肠段，再开始分节运动。小肠蠕动的速度很慢，约1～2cm/s，每个蠕动波只把食糜推进一段短距离（约数cm）后即消失。

3. Peristalsis The peristalsis of the small intestine usually overlaps with the rhythmic segmental movements, often coexisting. The significance of peristalsis is to advance the chyme after the segmented exercise to reach a new intestine and begin segmentation. The peristalsis of the small intestine is very slow, about 1 ~ 2cm / s, each peristaltic wave only after a short distance (about several cm) to the restaurant disappears.
